Better Bears Eco Friendly Recyclable Packaging

We all love gummy bears and, to this day, they remain a fan favourite candy for people all over the world. They’re bright, they’re colourful, and they always taste delicious.

For many people, the packaging used to sell gummy bears is what hooks them to make the purchase. In recent years, people have become more environmentally conscious of the types of packaging that brands use to sell their products. Therefore, it makes sense, from a financial and social point of view, for companies to invest in eco-friendly and compostable packaging.

What exactly goes into eco-friendly and compostable packaging, and how can environmentally friendly materials help reduce carbon footprints in support of a more sustainable way of life? This article will answer some of those questions and provide insight into why eco-friendly packaging is so important for both brands and consumers.

What is eco-friendly packaging?

In a broad sense, eco-friendly packaging is any form of packaging that’s recyclable, safe for individual people or animals, and is fully supportive of the environment. The materials used to create eco-friendly packaging are environmentally sustainable, and they have little impact on natural resources.

Companies that utilize eco-friendly packaging strive to reduce the amount of toxic materials traditionally used in the production of packaging. This helps support the goal of many companies, cities, and nations around the world of achieving targets of net-zero emissions as part of a broader goal to combat the effects of climate change and environmental destruction.

What are eco-friendly packaging materials?

The Green Business Bureau is an organization dedicated to promoting greener initiatives that educate companies on how to become more environmentally conscious. They provide a list of eco-friendly packaging materials that companies can use to improve their own ecological footprint and increase their brand reputations with eager consumers.

Among the most common materials used to support more compostable packaging are:

  • Biodegradable packing peanuts
  • Corrugated bubble wrap
  • Air pillows made of recycled materials
  • Cornstarch packaging
  • Organic fabrics
  • And more

At Better Bears, we support all efforts to promote a green shift towards environmentally friendly packaging. All of our products are packaged and shipped with materials that are biodegradable, promoting a zero waste philosophy that all of our customers can embrace.

Biodegradable vs. compostable packaging

Most people will use the terms biodegradable and compostable packaging interchangeably. While there are a lot of commonalities between the two types of packaging, there are a few notable differences as well.

Biodegradable packaging describes plant-based, animal-based or natural mineral-based packaging that will break down as a result of microorganisms of bacteria, fungi, and algae that erode the packaging over time. Compostable packaging describes materials that biologically degrade over time into CO2, water, or inorganic compounds that leave no visible or distinguishable toxic residue on the surrounding environment.

The key difference between the two is that all compostable materials are biodegradable, but not all biodegradable materials are compostable. Some biodegradable materials do leave residual traces behind, whereas compostable materials create valuable nutrients to enrich soil, benefit trees, and aid in the growth of new plants.

The importance of eco-friendly compostable packaging

Everyone can do their part to reduce carbon footprints and support more eco-friendly ways of living. By purchasing products from companies that use biodegradable, compostable, and eco-friendly materials, each one of us is reducing the amount of non-green waste we contribute to the environment.

Over 77.9 million tonnes of packaging waste is produced each and every year. While half of that waste is recyclable, it’s still a sizable amount of packaging that eventually ends up in landfills. That’s why it’s so important for companies to embrace the green shift and introduce more eco-friendly packaging to their operations.

Additionally, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that packaging waste accounts for 30 percent of all annual waste in the United States. Plastics and other non-biodegradable materials account for a large share of this waste. The carbon footprint generated by these materials can be significantly reduced if companies were to shift towards more environmentally friendly packaging.

Why we choose eco-friendly compostable packaging

At Better Bears, we’ve created a zero waste philosophy, helping all of our customers be more eco-friendly while they enjoy the sweet taste of our delicious gummy bears.
